How to Add Your Own Music to Spotify: The Ultimate Guide
Have you ever wanted to listen to an unreleased track, a custom mashup, or a rare song from your computer directly inside your Spotify app alongside your favorite mainstream hits?
Even though Spotify has millions of songs, it doesn’t have everything. Luckily, Spotify features a built-in Local Files tool that lets you seamlessly bridge the gap between your personal audio collection and your streaming library.
This step-by-step guide walks you through importing your own music to Spotify on your desktop and syncing it to your phone.
Step 1: Prepare Your Music Files
Before diving into Spotify, make sure your audio files are ready.
- Supported Formats: Spotify primarily supports MP3, MP4, and M4P files. (Note: Lossless formats like FLAC or standard M4A files may not show up automatically unless converted).
- Organize Your Folder: Create a dedicated folder on your computer (like a folder named “My Custom Music” inside your Documents or Music folder) and place all the tracks you want to import there.
Step 2: Enable Local Files on Your Desktop App
To kick off the process, you’ll need to use the Spotify desktop client (Windows or Mac), as local files must first be imported via computer.
- Open the Spotify desktop app and sign in.
- Click on your Profile icon in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Scroll down until you find the Your Library section.
- Toggle the switch for Show Local Files to the On position.
- Once enabled, click the Add a source button that appears right below it.
- A window will pop up—navigate to and select the music folder you prepared in Step 1, then click Open or OK.
Step 3: Add Your Files to a Playlist
Now that your computer has fed the tracks into Spotify, you’ll find a new folder in your library named Local Files. However, to easily manage them—and to listen to them on your phone—you should put them into a regular playlist:
- Go to Your Library and open the Local Files folder.
- Create a New Playlist (or open an existing one).
- Drag and drop your local tracks—or use the three-dot menu next to the songs—to add them into your custom playlist.
Step 4: Sync Your Music to Your Phone
Want to listen to your imported songs on the go? You can easily sync them to your iPhone or Android device:
- Make sure your phone and computer are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network.
- Open the Spotify app on your mobile device.
- Head to Settings and privacy (tap your profile picture in the top-left on mobile), look under Apps and devices, and toggle on Local audio files (Android) or ensure permissions are granted (iOS).
- Navigate to the playlist where you stored your local tracks on your computer.
- Tap the Download (down arrow) button on that playlist to download the songs directly to your mobile device over your local network.
Quick Troubleshooting Tips
If your music isn’t appearing or playing, check out these common fixes:
- Check the File Format: If a track is greyed out or missing, verify that it is saved as a standard
.mp3file. - Verify Wi-Fi Connection: If your mobile device won’t sync the local tracks, double-check that both devices share the exact same Wi-Fi connection.
- Firewall/Network Settings: On Windows, ensure your network profile is set to Private rather than Public so your devices can communicate locally.
