Is Dr. Vikas Divyakirti an IAS Officer? The Real Story Behind the Legend

If you have ever looked into India’s grueling UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Civil Services Examination preparation ecosystem, chances are you have run across the name Dr. Vikas Divyakirti. Widely recognized as a mentor, educator, and the founder of Drishti IAS, he commands massive respect across the country.

Because of his title, his deep knowledge of governance, and his association with civil services coaching, a common question frequently pops up: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?

The short answer is no, he is not a current IAS officer. However, his relationship with India’s civil services is uniquely intertwined, involving an actual selection, a brief stint in government service, and a bold choice to walk away.

The Truth: Did He Clear the UPSC Exam?

Yes, Dr. Vikas Divyakirti cleared the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination.

In 1996, during his first attempt at the age of 23, he successfully cracked India’s toughest examination, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.

Achieving this rank means he officially qualified for the civil services. However, he was not allocated to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Instead, based on his rank and preference, he was allotted to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS), serving as a section officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.

Popular culture and internet articles frequently label him broadly as an “ex-civil servant” or colloquially style him as an “ex-IAS” due to the common habit of associating top UPSC rank holders with the elite administrative cadre, but technically, he was a Central Secretariat Service officer.

Why Did He Leave Government Service?

Dr. Divyakirti’s tenure inside the corridors of power was remarkably brief. After working in the Ministry of Home Affairs for just a few months, he made the monumental decision to resign.

Driven by an intellectual passion for teaching, literature, and academia, he felt that a bureaucratic desk job did not align with his true calling. Opting out of a secure, prestigious government career—a path most aspirants spend years trying to secure—shocked many around him.

However, that single choice changed the trajectory of thousands of civil service aspirants. Returning fully to academia, he completed multiple advanced degrees, including a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature from Delhi University, and briefly taught at university-affiliated colleges.

The Birth of Drishti IAS

In November 1999, Dr. Divyakirti laid the foundation for what would become a household name in India’s education sector: Drishti IAS, located in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar hub. Starting with just a small handful of students preparing for Hindi-medium civil services exams, the institution grew over the decades into a massive coaching and educational ecosystem with branches in multiple cities like Jaipur, Prayagraj, and Lucknow.
