The Early Life and Youth of Sonia Gandhi: From Post-War Italy to Cambridge

Long before she became a central figure in modern Indian politics, Sonia Gandhi—born Sonia Maino—lived a quiet life in post-war Europe, far removed from the public eye and the corridors of power.

Childhood in Italy

Sonia Gandhi was born on December 9, 1946, in Lusiana, a small town in the Veneto region of Italy, near Turin. Raised in a working-class Roman Catholic family by her father, an Italian building contractor, her early years were shaped by the post-war reconstruction of Europe. Growing up, she had little knowledge or expectation of India, the country that would eventually define a major chapter of her adult life.

Expanding Horizons in England

As a young woman, she was sent by her family to a language school in Cambridge, England, to broaden her education. There, she focused on learning foreign languages—including English, French, and Russian—while immersing herself in student life abroad.

A Fateful Meeting in Cambridge

Sonia’s life took a defining turn when she crossed paths with Rajiv Gandhi, who was then studying engineering at the University of Cambridge.

The two first met at a small Greek restaurant in Cambridge after being introduced by a mutual friend. Reflecting on that initial encounter, Sonia recalled being immediately drawn to his calm and compassionate demeanor, noting that his striking gentleness left a lasting impression on her.

What started as a chance meeting quickly blossomed into a deep friendship. The couple spent their days exploring local sights, attending student gatherings, and enjoying university social events together, such as campus parties with fellow students.

Transition to India

Despite coming from entirely different cultural backgrounds, their bond grew stronger over time. After spending years building a strong connection in England, Sonia married Rajiv Gandhi on February 25, 1968. This marriage marked her transition from a private European upbringing into the heart of India’s most prominent political family, setting the stage for a remarkable life journey.
